Great Collection of Master writers of World Literature: past and present
For men and women in the pages of this book, »the pen was certainly mightier than the sword«.This book is a treasure of biographical sketches, list of major works, style and genre and basic information concerning history's greatest writers of world literature. The ever long list of writers are NOT arranged alphabetically but rather by date of birth, kind of like how bartlett's quotations is organized. This is a good way of seeing the evolution of world literature through the passing of the centuries as the color-coded side bars indicate s specific time frame within history. that they editors choose »501" writers does make room a whole series of talented people that make up probably the greatest collection of writers the world as ever seen. Big names such as Shakespeare, Cervantes, Hawthorne, Emerson, Hemingway, Tolkien, Poe and others are within the large assembly of the absolute best the world of literature as to offer. This is good resource for those interested in becoming writers themselves, in looking into what the greats of the past have done for future inspiration. One feature that I absolutely love about this book, is the small section on the top of each entry under the writers' name and date of birth/death,there is a «style and genre" section that describes accurately in most cases, what kind of writer he or she was or currently is with some of the much later entries and what genre that writer wrote in as well. This book is certainly interesting and will delight anyone who loves to read classical or contemporary literature.
